Modern, regulated trapping is used to manage habitat, monitor and control animal populations, and provide recreation and income to licensed individuals. There are strict regulations pertaining to the types of traps and methods used which can be used during the trapping season (see the Trapping In New Jersey page for more information).
Steel-jawed leghold type traps (e.g., coil-springs and longsprings) have articulated jaws that snap closed on either side of the lower limb of the animal stepping on the pan. These traps have been prohibited in New Jersey by legislation effective October, 1985.
Enclosed foothold traps have a round metal bar that restrains the lower limb of the animal against the trap's housing.
