Duck Banding Volunteers Needed

The Division's Waterfowl Ecology and Management Project annually bands ducks during the preseason banding period (July 1 through September 30) in order to estimate survival rates and document movements of ducks produced in New Jersey. Some of our most successful banding sites are located on private property where WCC Volunteers or other cooperators are able to bait the site. When the ducks begin to use these sites regularly, we capture them with bait traps or rocket nets. There are probably many sites around the state where there are considerable concentrations of ducks during summer that we don't know about where a great potential for banding exists. If you don't know of such a site, particularly where landowners currently feed ducks during the summer, we would like to know about it. We could also use volunteers to bait banding sites if one exists near your home. Baiting sites only takes a few minutes a day or every other day but generally needs to be done at the same time every day. The time depends on the ducks: some sites need to be baited after dark while others need to be baited during mid-day. Note that we are interested in banding mallards, black ducks and wood ducks (not Canada geese) and that this work would be done from July through September, just prior to the onset of migration. Baiting generally needs to be done for 2 to 6 weeks at an individual site in order to catch ducks. Those interested should call Ted Nichols at 609-628-3218.
