Description:
Abstract:
Gravity anomalies are produced by density variations within the rocks of the Earth's crust and upper mantle. Mapping of these density variations is the primary use of gravity anomalies.

Bouguer Anomalies of New Jersey is a GIS shapefile of bouguer gravity contours (lines) at 1 milligal intervals. The contours are based on gravity data in New Jersey and vicinity. The New Jersey contours were clipped at the state outline. The bouguer anomalies in New Jersey range from a low of -58 milligals to a high of +37milligals.

Purpose:
To provide information on the gravity values in New Jersey and useful for geologic interpretations.

Process_Description:
Gravity measurements made on the surface of the Earth must be corrected in various ways before they can be made into an anomaly map. The free-air correction reduces the measurement to sea level by assuming that there is no intervening mass. The simple Bouguer correction accounts for the intervening mass as a uniform slab of constant density, and the complete Bouguer correction includes the effects of constant density topography within 166.7 km of the measurement location. A gravity reference field is subtracted from the corrected measurements to produce the free-air, simple Bouguer, or complete Bouguer anomaly.

Gravity data for New Jersey and vicinity obtained from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, US Dept. of Defence and the New Jersey Geological Survey were reduced to obtain Bouguer gravity anomalies. The Bouguer anomaly values were gridded (kriging) and contoured. The contoured data were converted to DXF file format and exported to ESRI's ARCINFO line coverage. The line coverage was then converted to shape file using ESRI's ArcView 3.2. Each line was assigned a contour value in milligals. Then using the New Jersey state outline New Jersey contours were clipped from data from the surrounding states for this shape file.
