Description:
Abstract:
New Jersey is divided into the Valley and Ridge, Highlands, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain Physiographic Provinces. Each province defines a region in which relief, landforms, and geology are significantly different from that of the adjoining and nearby regions. The boundary between each province is determined by a major change in topography and geology, and this data set delineates the boundary lines between them.
Purpose:
The physiographic provinces are delineated at a scale of 1:100,000. These data can be used with the state's geologic data set to break out different geologic regions when compiling or analyzing information.
Supplemental_Information:
The province boundaries were derived from the Bedrock Geology of New Jersey data set as well as the information in The Physical Geography of New Jersey: Final report of the State Geologist, Vol. 4, by Rollin D. Salisbury, 1898.

Attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the source materials. When attributes cannot be visually verified on plots they are interactively queried and verified on the screen.

The software (Arc/Info) checks for topology consistency and ensures that there are no duplicate lines, overshoots or undershoots.

Four tics on each mylar were utilized to register the data for digitizing (editing). A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.005 was required (approximately 41.67 feet at 1:100,000 scale). Proof plots were made for each data set on mylar and compared to the original data. Linework that deviated from the original position by more than 0.02 inch were re-digitized, re-plotted, and corrected until acceptable results were obtained.

The Bedrock Geology of New Jersey was scanned and digitized from United States Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-2540-A (Bedrock Geologic Map of Northern New Jersey), Open-File Series Map 95-253 (Bedrock Geologic Map of Central New Jersey), and Open-File Series Map 95-254 (Bedrock Geologic Map of Southern New Jersey). The files were geo-registered to United States Geological Survey 30x60 minute, 1:100,000 scale topographic maps.
The state boundary is taken from the STATE reference coverage available from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Information Technology, 401 E. State St., Trenton, NJ 08625. The data meets the national map accuracy standards for the 1:100,000 scale.

Process_Description:
All references that discussed the physiographic provinces of New Jersey were reviewed to determine why the various authors placed the boundaries where they did. After extensive review and based on the formal definition of a physiographic province it was decided to mainly follow the work of Rollin D. Salisbury. There are some areas where the geologic contact was exclusively followed for convenience rather than topography. These include the Furnace Brook- Pequest Valley and the Franklin area as well as Peapack- Gladstone area. Once it was determined what would define the boundaries for the various provinces it became a simple geographic information system exercise to create the data set.
The maps were scanned using a CalComp ScanPlus II roll-feed, E-format, two-camera scanner at 400 dots per inch. The scanned image accuracy is reported at +/-.25 percent. A CalComp 9500 digitizer with an accuracy of +/- 0.005 in. (+/-0.127 mm) was used for editing the data. All features were vectorized or digitized as board-inches. Proof-plots were generated and overlaid onto the original Miscellaneous Investigations and Open-File maps. Tics were digitized into the coverages using the 7.5 mjnute graticule on the base map. The coverages were then transformed into NAD83 state plane coordinates utilizing the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection STATCO coverage.
Four tics on each mylar were utilized to register the data for digitizing (editing). A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.005 was required (approximately 41.67 feet at 1:100,000 scale). Proof plots were made for each data set on mylar and compared to the original data. Linework that deviated from the original position by more than 0.02 inch were re-digitized, re-plotted, and corrected until acceptable results were obtained
