Description:

Abstract:: The Meadowlands District was delineated for the Hackensack Meadowlands Reclamation and Development Act of 1969. It defines the area managed under the Master Plan developed by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC; formerly the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission). NJMC serves as the zoning and planning agency for a 30.4-square-mile area along the Hackensack River covering parts of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.It is represented in this layer by NJ Meadowlands boundary polygon, with exclusion areas in parts of Secaucus.
Purpose: Created for general GIS cartographic use.
Supplemental_Information:: This feature class was created from KMZ line file provided by Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute (MERI), Original mapping was done from 1:2400 nominal scale base.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:: KMZ file provided by MERI was decompressed using 7zip utility. ArcToolbox tool KML to Layer was used to convert the KML to a file geodatabase feature dataset polyline feature class, and a layer file.
A new feature class was created in the same coordinate system (Geographic, WGS84), and polygons were created in it from each of the polyline features, using the Advanced editing Construct Polygons tool. This resulted in three polygons, one for the outside boundary and two for exclusion areas within its borders.
The exclusion area polygons were used to clip out holes from the large boundary polygon. The feature class was then projected to NAD83 NJ State Plane coordinates and the separate exclusion area polygons were deleted. The Acres filed was added and filled using a Python field calculation: !SHAPE_Area! * 0.000029569330.
