Abstract:

This GIS data-set represents the source water areas (up to 12-year time of travel) for the combined wells for each active public community groundwater drinking water treatment facility in NJ (as of 200301). A groundwater source water area (also referred to as wellhead protection areas (WHPA)) is a calculated area around a well, which delineates the horizontal extent of ground water captured by a well pumping at a specific rate over a two-, five-, and twelve-year period. For more information on the groundwater source water areas refer to <http://www.state.nj.us/dep/njgs/geodata/dgs02-2.htm> The source water assessment process determined the susceptibility (Low, Medium, or High) of each treatment facility to 8 contaminant groups (Disinfection Byproduct (DBP) Precursors, Inorganics, Nutrients, Pathogens, Pesticides, Radionuclides, Radon, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)) which can also be linked to for geographical display.

Purpose:

The groundwater source water areas, sometimes referred to as wellhead protection areas, in this data-set represent the combined public community well groundwater source water areas for each public community groundwater treatment facility active as of 200301. The treatment facilities may have a surface water component as well, however only the groundwater contribution is mapped in this data-set. Groundwater source water areas were created as part of the NJ Source Water Assessment Program. They represent the 2-year (Tier 1), 5-year (Tier 2), and 12-year (Tier 3) time of travel zones for each public community well in New Jersey. Many times multiple wells serve a treatment facility and the source water areas will overlap causing display and attribute problems. This data-set was created to better display the groundwater source water areas and to create relationship id fields for each source water area.

The groundwater public community well coverages were generated based on point coordinates (well locations) located using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and tested against known benchmarks. The locations have an accuracy of plus or minus 40 feet in any direction. The methodology of how the tiers were generated is documented in the "Guidelines for Delineation of Well Head Protection Areas in New Jersey" available as a download at :<http://www.state.nj.us/dep/njgs/whpaguide.pdf>. The individual well source water areas were merged into treatment facility source water areas based on which wells supplied water to each facility and should therefore have the same accuracy as the original data-set.

The Arc UNION command was used to union each individual well source water area then the Arc Dissolve command was used on the union generated coverage to dissolve any inner boundaries based on the "tier" attribute. This process was repeated one well source water area at a time for however many wells supplied water to the treatment facility.
