Abstract:

The place name locations in this data were obtained via download from the United States Geological Survey, Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) website: https://geonames.usgs.gov. The NJ_Features database version was last updated 12/1/2017 and containes 21,892 records. The downloaded data contained 2,598 place names throughout the state of New Jersey. The data was then modified to include only two characterizations of type - populated place and a selection of locale (non-official locations). Thus, this data includes points that represent municipal and other official boundaries as well as various federally recognized neighborhoods and communities.

Purpose:

This data was downloaded and manipulated in order to add place name locations to NJDEP's newest GeoWeb application. The data is also useful for informational purposes within the State on New Jersey.

Individual points were taken from existing USGS 7.5' topoquad maps. The USGS conducted tests to determine attribute accuracy as follows:
During Phase I data compilation, a random sample of 10% of the entries in the system were visually verified against the compilation source data (large-scale USGS topographic maps) to ensure an accuracy rate of at least 95%. Subsequent data compilation and input processes ensure accuracy with programmed validation checks for format and content, visual examination, and spot checks of data.

The USGS conducted logical consistency tests as follows:
