Abstract:

Line feature class derived from Road Centerlines of New Jersey, published by the NJ Office of GIS (NJOIT, OGIS). Lines for toll highways, Interstate highways, US, State, and County highways, were selected from the Road Centerlines layer, then dissolved on a combination of attributes designed to produce a single record for each geographically-related, identically-named road.

Purpose:

The Major Road Centerlines layer was produced for cartographic use in small-scale (large area) maps.

Roads were digitized to the visible center of a street (cartway). Digitizers were trained to visually check work against orthoimagery. A random QC was completed for consistency. Roads taken from other sources were minimally edited to provide connectivity within the network and to bring the representation within the cartway as shown on 2012 orthoimagery.

A local copy of the file geodatabase publication roads data was created. The following indexes were added to the centerline feature class: SEG_GUID SYMBOLTYPE H1_NAME
In ArcMap, the centerline feature class was added as a query layer, record criteria as follows: SYMBOLTYPE = 100 OR SYMBOLTYPE = 200 OR SYMBOLTYPE = 300 OR SYMBOLTYPE = 400 OR SYMBOLTYPE = 500 OR SYMBOLTYPE = 600. These correspond to the following highway types:
100 Highway Authority Route 200 Interstate 300 US Highway 400 State Highway 500 County 500 Route 600 Other County Route
This query layer was exported to a feature class. The feature class has 95277 records.
The following fields were then added to the undissolved major roads feature class: MAJOR_NAME TEXT 50 SRI TEXT 20 An index also was added to the published LRS table: SEG_GUID.

In order to prepare for an appropriate dissolve, the following processing was performed: 1) In undissolved major roads feature class, MAJOR_NAME was filled with the contents of H1_NAME, unless that field had no entry (zero length string). For those records, the entry in PRIME_NAME was used, if one existed. If no PRIME_NAME entry, the feature and its attributes were examined, and MAJOR_NAME was filled in as appropriate from other information in the record (1 record), or the record was deleted from the selected but undissolved feature class (one record.)
2) The linear referencing table was joined to the undissolved major road feature class on SEG_GUID, and the SRI field was filled with the first eight (8) characters of the SRI from the linear referencing table via python command: !Tran_road_LRS_NJ.SRI![:8] . The join was then removed.
3) Created indexes on the following fields in addition to those listed above: PRIME_NAME L1_NAME H1_SHLD H1_SUBSHLD H1_NUM MAJOR_NAME SRI

Feature class was quality checked by sorting on and examining the intended disslove fields. Edits were made to correct a bad H1_NAME (two records with no qualifying text); changed null values to zero-length strings in SRI (two records.) The feature class was then dissolved using the ArcToolbox Dissolve tool on the following combination of fields and settings: SYMBOLTYPE,L1_NAME, H1_SHLD, H1_SUBSHLD, H1_NUM, MAJOR_NAME, SRI. Create multipart features = true. Unsplit lines = false. The resulting feature class has 6529 records.
