Description:
Abstract:
A designated Transit Village is the area around a transit facility that the municipality has demonstrated a commitment to revitalizing and redeveloping into a compact, mixed-use neighborhood with a strong residential component. The municipality must apply for designation and must meet the Transit Village Criteria. The program is administered by the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT), which provides information on the program Web site <http://www.state.nj.us/transportation/community/village/index.shtml>. This feature class replaces the previous edition of the Transit Village points. This edition uses the same methodology for all the rail station and bus terminal center points. The points are located by using the outside corners of the platform or platforms to create a rectangle, and then extracting the centroid of the rectangle for each station or terminal. Center points for indoor or underground platforms were estimated from entrances (see source record for details.)
Purpose:
This spatial data set was created to locate the designated Transit Village Initiative station centerpoints and then determine those areas within 1/2 mile of the designated centerpoints, for general planning and cartographic use. This is not a legal document. The points were not surveyed and should not be used as survey data.
Supplemental_Information:
As of June 2016 there were 32 Transit Villages: Located at three bus terminals and twenty-nine rail stations.
Because of the new, consistent methodology for locating the station center points, most of the points are in slightly different locations from releases of previous years. Position differences range from 0 to 156 ft.
Note that the location of the East Orange Transit Village at the East Orange station was in error in numerous previous data releases. This was corrected to the Brick Church station for the release of August, 2015.

Use_Constraints:
The points were NOT surveyed and should not be used as survey data. This data set was created using Urban Transit Hub, Transit Village, and Economic Opportunity Act legislation and should be used for general planning purposes only. This data set should NOT be used as the final determination for properties located within 1/2 mile of a transit station. Also see Dates, Purpose, Data Quality, Constraint, and Distribution sections in this metadata record for conditions that limit appropriate uses. Acknowledgement of the data set providers: NJ Office of Information Technology (NJOIT), Office of Geographic Information Systems (OGIS); and NJ Department of State (SOS), Office for Planning Advocacy (OPA), would be appreciated for maps, data or other products derived from this data set. See Legal Constraints, Limitations of Use (Distribution Liability) for legal disclaimer.

Source_Contribution:
Passenger rail station platform mid-points for rail, light rail, and subway service lines operated by New Jersey Transit and connecting commuter lines. Points are located at the midpoint of the extent of single side station platforms and midpoint of the extent of combined platforms when on both sides of the track(s)- that is on the tracks. This was done by creating a new polygon layer with rectangles digitized that described the outermost points of the station platform or platforms if on both sides of the tracks, based on the 2012 orthophotography. That means that when both sides of the tracks had platforms, both sides were encompassed by the rectangle and the point is located on the tracks between the platforms. When the platorm is on one side, the point is on the platform. When subway platforms were not visible, the extent of the entrances was used. For some of the large indoor stations, points are just an estimate. The rectangle layer was then used to generate a centroid point.
The same general approach was used for Bus terminals needed for the EOA14 layer.

Transit Village center points received from Steven Karp, NJ Department of State, Office for Planning Advocacy, were examined, and Transit Village names were edited to match previously-published data. Attributes from previous data were copied via join on Transit Village name. Attributes were added for the newly-designated Hackensack Transit Village. X and Y values were re-calculated using ArcMap Calculate Geometry function on data in a WGS84 data frame, using transformation WGS_1984_(ITRF00)_To_NAD_1983 against NAD83 NJ State Plane data. COMMENTS field was edited to reflect only meaningful comments for current data.
