This data represents the 2002 Integrated Report final assessment results for conventional parameters, metals, aquatic life use, recreational use, shellfish harvesting, and fish advisories in open coastal waters including bays, estuaries, and ocean waters . The assessments are based on data from NJDEP Monitoring Networks, Coastal Beach Monitoring (health departments), EPA Coastal Monitoring, and NY Harbor Monitoring. The following parameters were evaluated: fecal coliform, dissolved oxygen, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, silver, and zinc.
This data spatially represents the assessment results for conventionals. metals, aquatic life use, recreational use, shellfish harvesting, and fish advisories in coastal waters. This coverage depicts spatial extent by associating a single sampling point to a open waterbody and applying the assessment results to the waterbody. The methods used for the final results are explained in the NJDEP document, "Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Methods." Conventional Water Quality Parameters Assessment - Section 4.1 Toxic Water Quality Parameters Assessment - Section 4.2 Recreational Designated Use Assessment - Section 5.2 Fish Consumption Designate Use Assessment - Section 5.4 Shellfish Harvesting Designated Use Assessment - Section 5.5 Spatial Extent Assessment Methods - Section 6

Waterbody polygons based on NJDEP Shellfish Classifications for New Jersey Version 2001.
Polygons originally based on NJDEP Shellfish Classification 2001. Included verification check with approximately 90% of the entries.
Checked and corrected all overlapping polygons, open polygons, slivers, and null polygons.
Blank entries for assessment results are unassessed parameters.

Waterbody polygons used as the basis for linework.
The NJDEP Shellfish Classification for New Jersey was used as the base polygons for the waterbodies. The following edits were completed: a) intersected Watershed Management Areas; b) using USGS topoquads, separated waterbodies such as Manasquan Bay, and other bays and rivers; c) moved eastern boundary to 3 nautical miles off the coast; d) cleaned up overlapping polygons, slivers, and other artifacts; e) divided ocean waters into quadrants based on location of EPA Helicopter Monitoring Network Sites (split waters half-way between monitoring points); f) added Arthur Kill, Newark Bay, Upper New York Bay to Coastal Waters; g) removed tidal rivers from base coverage; h) merged some polygons if the assessment results were the same and the full waterbody name was the same also. Named all the polygons by waterbody(bay, river, ocean), assigned a unique number to each polygon in the the same waterbody and imported the shellfish classification name. Concatenated all of these three fields to create a unique "Full Waterbody Name" for each polygon. Assigned assessment results to each assessed waterbody based on Water Assessment Team's data base. Intersected watershed management areas and HUC 11 coverages as well. SEE the document "Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Methods" for the description of the spatial extent method for coastal waters.
