Description:
Abstract:
This data was derived from the freshwater wetlands (FWW) data generated under the New Jersey Freshwater Wetlands Mapping Program. The FWW are network coverages with both linear and polygon wetlands delineated and coded. Linear wetlands features were reselected out of FWW to form this dataset. Any arc that was a linear wetland feature was given a valid wetlands (CLASS) code in the original data set.
Freshwater wetlands delineations were made on 1986 orthophoto quarterquad basemaps (1:12000) by photo interpretation of 1986 CIR photos. The classification system used was a modified Cowardin system (Cowardin, et al., 1979). All freshwater wetland polygons greater than 1 acre in area and all linear freshwater wetland features greater than 10 feet in width were mapped. The 1986 quarterquad basemaps meet NMAS and are orthophotos.
Purpose:
The FWW theme was mapped to fulfill a requirement of the Freshwater Wetlands Act of 1987.
This dataset is intended to serve as a resource for analysis rather than regulatory delineations. The NJDEP may change the linework based on more in depth analysis and field inspection for regulatory purposes.
Supplemental Information:
All of the detail of the single line freshwater wetland features from the FWW maps, both in the linework and coding (Cowardin classification), has been retained in this product. In addition to the full Cowardin alpha-numeric wetlands classification code (see FWW.TXT), each feature has been given a more general Anderson (4 digit) classification code, LUCODE (see ANDERSON.TXT). LUCODE is the appropriate Anderson Landuse/Landcover classifications level into which each wetland type in the FWW system would fit. Since the Anderson system is not as detailed at the Cowardin system as regards wetlands types, the LUCODE attribute can be used to generalize the FWW delineations into broader, less detailed layers.
The wetland definition and classification system commonly referred to as the Cowardin system was developed under the auspices of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is described in detail in "The Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States", Cowardin, et al., 1979. The attribute item COWARDIN represents a wetlands type described under this system.
Through this classification scheme, wetlands are first placed into one of five basic ecological systems: Marine, Estuarine, Riverine, Palustrine, and Lacustrine. Each of these systems may then be divided further into subsystems, classes, and subclasses. Special modifiers relating to water regime, water chemistry, soil characteristics and other special site characteristics can also be used to further define the wetland type.
Each of these categories is represented by either an alpha or a numeric character, with the wetland type for any specific wetland area being fully described by combining all alpha/numeric codes for any of the characteristics that apply.
For example, the wetland COWARDIN attribute PFO1c is interpreted as:
P Palustrine
FO Forested
1 Broad-leaved Deciduous
c Seasonally Flooded
Note that not all categories and descriptors are applicable to every wetland type. Mixtures of wetlands can also be identified, with the major types separated by a '/', as with PSS4Bh/PFO4Bh.
FWW.TXT lists all categories used in the Cowardin system and their alpha or numeric symbol. This file can then be used to interpret the wetland type described by the COWARDIN attribute in this data layer.
The Anderson et al. 1976 (modified 1999, by NJDEP) classification system is a hierarchical system based on four digits. The four digits represent three levels of classification: Level I, general; Level II, descriptive, and Level III, detailed. Therefore the first digit in the code is the Level I general classification. The first two digits reveal the Level II descriptive code and the four digits represent the detailed Level III code.
For example the LUCODE attribute 6210 represents:
6### Wetlands
62## Wetlands, Interior Wetlands
6210 Wetlands, Interior Wetlands, Deciduous Wooded Wetlands

Attribute Accuracy Report:
Some field checking was done on each quarterquad, minimum of four points. Contractor's post-scanning mylar proof sheets, and digital files, were checked by NJDEP staff against original delineation mylars for completeness and accuracy. Line codes on proof sheets and in digital files were also checked against original delineation mylars. Errors were corrected to achieve 100% coding accuracy.
