Abstract:

The 2007 Aquatic Pesticides Sites List for New Jersey are those sites that were permitted through the NJDEP Pesticide Control Program for aquatic pesticide use in the waterbodies of the state. Site location names are provided by pesticide applicators, and may differ from state/county/municipality recognized names. Point locations do not indicate area of pesticide usage, only indicate the waterbody/aquatic site where treatment was permitted. Sites with multiple waterbodies under one permit have just one point location, usually at the waterbody closest to the outlet/receiving water source. There were a total of 1108 permit applications submitted to the department in 2007, however only 1080 sites are included in this dataset. Thirteen applications were withdrawn or denied, 11 were special local needs permits for natural bottom swimming pools, and 4 permits were for right-of-way maintenance and could not be expressed by a single point. These sites were intentionally removed. If there are questions about specific sites please refer to listed responsible NJDEP contacts.

Purpose:

This data was compiled and manipulated for there is a general interest in the trends of aquatic pesticide use for the control of aquatic weeds throughout the state of New Jersey. The information is intended to be a starting point for those individuals interested in the aquatic pesticide usage in their area or at a specific site.

II. Terms of Agreement
1. Digital data received from the NJDEP are to be used solely for internal purposes in the conduct of daily affairs.

Any reproduction or manipulation of the above data must ensure that the coordinate reference system remains intact.
3. Digital data received from the NJDEP may not be reproduced or redistributed for use by anyone without first obtaining written permission from the NJDEP. This clause is not intended to restrict distribution of printed mapped information produced from the digital data.
4. Any maps, publications, reports, or other documents produced as a result of this project that utilize NJDEP digital data will credit the NJDEP's Geographic Information System (GIS) as the source of the data with the following credit/disclaimer:
"This (map/publication/report) was developed using New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Geographic Information System digital data, but this secondary product has not been verified by NJDEP and is not state-authorized."
5. Users shall require any independent contractor, hired to undertake work that will utilize digital data obtained from the NJDEP, to agree not to use, reproduce, or redistribute NJDEP GIS data for any purpose other than the specified contractual work. All copies of NJDEP GIS data utilized by an independent contractor will be required to be returned to the original user at the close of such contractual work.

Attribute data were checked for errors in several ways. Site location information (coordinates, county, watershed management area, etc.) were taken from pesticide permit applications submitted by registered responsible applicators in the state of New Jersey and verified by NJDEP staff to ensure accuracy. When information was found to be inaccurate, data was corrected and updated to reflect proper site coordinates. Pesticide use information was checked through some independent sampling (field inspections), though this was done only in a small percentage of the total sites treated in 2007. All accuracy of uninspected sites rely on the accuracy of submitted records by the licensed pesticide applicator/business performing pesticide treatment.

Individual site locations were taken from pesticide permit applications submitted by registered responsible applicators in the state of New Jersey. All points were then verified against submitted site sketches, locator maps, aerial photographs and site inspections by NJDEP staff to ensure accuracy. When points where found to be inaccurate, data was corrected and updated to reflect proper site coordinates.

Completeness_Report:

Several (n=4) sites were removed from the original database because they were not appropriate for this coverage, as they are permits covering large areas, for example Right-of-Ways (ROW). Denied and or withdrawn permits were also filtered from this coverage. Although pesticide treatment was proposed at these sites, no permits were actually issued during the given treatment year.

Accuracy of these digital data is based upon the use of base maps that meet National Map Accuracy Standards. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to assess digital positional accuracy.

Process_Description:

The aquatic pesticide use site locations and included attribute data in this dataset were obtained via permit application process of the NJDEP Aquatic Pesticide Permit Program (APP). Site location data was then checked and verified by NJDEP staff to ensure accuracy. Site location data was checked against digital maps and when necessary were field verified with the use of a Trimble Global Positioning System Unit. Site coordinates were submitted in various coordinate types. All coordinates were transformed into NJ State Plane Feet projection NAD83 by using the free software CORPSCON made available by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The total number of approved site locations included in this dataset for 2007 was 1080, totaling 1787 records that are included in this database.
