GET READY, NEW JERSEY!
TROUT SEASON OPENS SATURDAY, APRIL 10

(10/P22) TRENTON -New Jersey’s trout season officially opens on Saturday, April 10, at 8 a.m., and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today encouraged residents and visitors to enjoy time outdoors and experience the thrill of catching some fabulous fish.

“Every year, more people are taking time to enjoy New Jersey’s year-round trout fishing opportunities in our beautiful streams, lakes and ponds. The word is definitely spreading that New Jersey is the place to be for first-rate trout fishing and for spending quality time outdoors,” Commissioner Martin said.

A recent survey of New Jersey anglers revealed that nearly 70 percent go fishing to get outdoors and enjoy nature. About 50 percent of anglers surveyed said they also fish to experience the excitement of the catch. This year, trout anglers won't be disappointed on either front.

For opening day alone, the DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife will release nearly 190,000 trout throughout the state. By the end of May, nearly 600,000 trout will be stocked in waters statewide for unforgettable fishing that will last through summer.

Most of the fish stocked during spring are 10½ inches long and weigh one-half pound. But anglers also will have the chance to catch bragging-sized trout this season. During April and May, the Division of Fish and Wildlife releases more than 6,000 big breeder trout, weighing 2 pounds to 5 pounds. As a special bonus for opening day, select ponds and small lakes throughout the state received an extra share of these huge trout. All of the trout are raised at the DEP’s Pequest Trout Hatchery in Warren County.

Come October and November, New Jersey anglers can gear up to hook into some 26,000 super-sized trout, which measure 14 inches to 24 inches, and can be caught throughout autumn and winter.

Trout anglers ages 16 through 69 are reminded to buy a New Jersey fishing license and trout stamp. Both can be easily purchased either online at www.njfishandwildlife.com and printed immediately at home, or from license agents throughout the state. License buyers have the satisfaction of knowing 100 percent of their money goes toward improving fishing in New Jersey and protecting the quality of the state’s waters both for fish and people.
