Squankum Brook Restoration (July 2012)

Higbee Beach MapLOCATION: Squankum Brook, Howell Township, Monmouth County – Watershed Management Area 12

PURPOSE:    Restore approximately 2 miles of channelized stream to a meandering stream using a hydro geomorphic approach to benefit American eel and other fish and wildlife habitat.

FUNDING: Funding was primarily supplied by the NJDEP, Office of Natural Resource restoration (ONRR) from money that was received from Natural Resource Damage Settlements that occurred in Watershed Management Area 12 (WMA-12). NJ Comprehensive Wetland Restoration Program (NJCWRP) also contributed towards the project.

PROJECT SUMMARY:  The project consisted of restructuring flow patterns in order to improve foraging opportunities, nursery conditions and habitat for several fish species including American eel, and potentially brook trout. Within the entire reach, restoration and stabilization occurred in order to provide much needed habitat for the Eastern Mud Salamander which is indigenous to the stream, as well as green and leopard frogs.
