Sutlers were 18th-century peddlers who followed the armies to provide the troops with necessities and small luxuries. Today, they serve an even larger role—providing re-enactors and the general public with not only small luxuries, but also many of the necessities once provided by army quartermasters: uniforms, cloth, edged weapons, tin ware, and wooden ware. Some sutlers have books and CDs on military life and military music. Others cater to the young soldier with tricorn hats, wooden muskets, and toy fifes. Some demonstrate their crafts. If you enjoy shopping, come early and stroll along Sutlers’ Row.
Sutlers: Preregistration is required and sites will be assigned. Please complete the attached form and mail to Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Your registration must be received by June 1st. Sutlers may begin arriving and setting up after 9 a.m. Friday, June 17th.
