Radiologist Assistant

Scope of Practice:

A radiologist assistant is permitted to perform those fluoroscopic procedures and other tasks authorized by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners (BME) published at N.J.A.C. 13:35-6.20A. Any questions or clarification regarding the scope of practice must be directed to the BME.

In order to engage in the above scope of practice, you must maintain a current: (a) license as a radiologist assistant; (b) license as a diagnostic radiologic technologist; and (c) radiologist assistant certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or another national certifying body approved by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners.

Educational Requirement:

Satisfactorily complete a radiologist assistant school approved by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or another national certifying body approved by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners. If you have completed a radiologist assistant program that is approved by a national certifying body other than the ARRT, you will need to submit information contained in the examination/license appendix.

Examination and Certification Requirements:

Pass and maintain a valid active radiologist assistant certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or another national certifying body approved by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners. If you are certified by a national certifying body other than the ARRT, you must submit proof of your current certification and information from that organization regarding its examination and continuing education requirements.

License Application and Requirements:

To become licensed radiologis assistant, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Hold a current diagnostic radiologic technology license;
  2. Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or the equivalent;
  3. Be of good moral character as determined by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners;
  4. Comply with the above educational requirement;
  5. Comply with the above examination and certification requirements; and
  6. Submit to the Department a complete application.

* If you passed another state's examination, you must submit proof of a current state diagnostic radiography license and information from that state agency regarding its licensing examination.

** If you passed another examination, you must submit proof of passing this examination and information from that organization regarding its examination.
