RE: USE OF AFFIDAVIT IN LIEU OF A DEATH CERTIFICATE WITH RESPECT TO LIFE INSURANCE CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF THE TRAGIC EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11
In Bulletin No. 01-14 , all Department licensees were encouraged to take into consideration the difficulties related to this tragedy that claimants and customers have endured and will continue to endure, and to exercise prudent discretion with respect to documentation and other requirements.
With respect to life insurance claims arising out of these tragic events, I encourage all life insurers and reinsurers to allow and accept a fully executed affidavit from the victim’s next of kin, in lieu of a death certificate, if such certificate is not available. Companies may also utilize other information as well to complete the claim process.
