Educator Preparation Programs and Certification

The COVID-19 Waiver Guidance for Education Certification webinar includes information on:

Temporary Instructional Certificate of Eligibility for Teacher Candidates

Candidates seeking initial teaching certificates may be eligible for a temporary certification that allows candidates to enter the workforce before passing basic skills and content knowledge test(s) (e.g. Praxis). See the Temporary Instructional CE Guidance for more information

Temporary Administrative Certificate of Eligibility for Leader Candidates

Candidates seeking initial administrative certificates for school administrator or principal may be eligible for a temporary certification that allows candidates to enter the workforce before passing the content knowledge test(s) (e.g. Praxis). See the Temporary Administrative CE Guidance for more information.

Temporary Flexibilities for Other Instructional and Educational Services Certification Candidates

The Department has created new temporary flexibilities for Career and Technical Education, Limited Certificate for Foreign Educators, Charter School Certificate of Eligibility Candidates, Speech Language Specialist and Educational Interpreter candidates. EdTPA Guidance

The Updated EdTPA guidance provides a description of the NJDOE’s temporary waiver of the teacher certification performance assessment (edTPA) requirement due to the logistical constraints posed by the COVID-19 state of emergency.

The mentoring guidance outlines requirements and flexibilities for new teacher mentoring.

Clinical Guidance for Preparation Programs

All approved preparation programs are designed to meet clinical requirements set forth in administrative code. In emergency situations, preparation programs should prioritize the safety and wellness of their candidates and have the discretion to adjust the schedule and make other accommodations to provide candidates an opportunity to meet clinical requirements.

Physiology and Hygiene Assessment

At this time, the NJDOE is encouraging programs to provide an online assessment option and is in the process of developing a statewide online physiology and hygiene test and will keep providers updated about this option.
