Performance Assessment for Teacher Certification

In June of 2014, regulations requiring teacher candidates to pass a performance assessment in order to gain licensure were adopted and in December of 2015 edTPA was selected as the Commissioner- approved assessment. On August 3, 2016 the State Board of Education voted to set the cut score on the Commissioner-approved performance assessment, edTPA.

As of September 1, 2017, successful completion of the performance assessment will be required for all candidates seeking a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) and Certificate of Eligibility (CE) holders1 will be required to successfully complete the performance assessment before earning a standard certificate.

As adopted by the New Jersey State Board of Education, the implementation timeline for edTPA is designed to enable a gradual ramp-up to full implementation.
