MONROE TWP (23-3290)

Monroe Township School District commits itself to all children by preparing them to reach their full potential and to function in a global society through a preeminent education. The district is rapidly growing and now serves over 6000 students in eight schools: Barclay Brook (pre-k-2), Mill Lake (pre-k-2), Oak Tree (pre-k-3), Brookside (3-5), Woodland (3-5), Applegarth (4-5), Monroe Township Middle School (6-8), and Monroe Township High School (9-12). Monroe Township School District, in collaboration with the members of the community, ensures that all children receive an exemplary education by well-trained committed staff in a safe and orderly environment.
During the 2013-2014 school year the district will begin to implement the newly approved Strategic Plan. This Strategic Plan was created with input from all stakeholders within the Monroe Township community and will serve as an annual guide in 6 areas: communication, community engagement, instruction, facilities, technology/fine arts, and fiscal accountability. Design teams in each area will meet regularly to discuss how to make long-term lasting improvements that will guide the district in our quest for excellence.

NJ State test results continue to demonstrate significant, sustained student growth in mathematics, english language arts, and science. The district consistently outperforms the district factor group and state mean.

For the past two years Monroe Township was awarded a New Jersey Department of Education pilot grant for Teacher Effective Evaluation. The district chose to participate in the pilot in order to lead change in creating a more meaningful and effective evaluation model for our schools. Both administrators and teachers received ongoing professional development in the Dr. Robert Marzano Framework. The superintendent also received a grant from Learning Forward Foundation to implement a coaching model to provide effective feedback and growth for teachers. Both of these opportunities have created a strong foundation for excellence in 21st century leadership and teaching.

The Curriculum and Instruction office, which is the backbone of the District, has been organized to provide school level support for instructional improvement. Content supervisors and instructional coaches work with teachers to align curriculum to the Common Core Curriculum Standards and bring best practices to classroom teachers.

The district’s professional development plan provides options for staff members and stresses a personalized professional development experience. Teachers can chose to participate in year-long courses, or personalized professional development projects such as action research, book or lesson study, or peer coaching. All projects must be data driven with a clear focus on improved student outcomes.
