The Montclair school district features a magnet school system comprised of theme-based schools for grades K-8, as well as a comprehensive high school for grades 9-12 that includes distinctive small learning communities, a ninth grade academy, and over 25 Advanced Placement courses. The district offers families a rich variety of learning environments for their children designed to enhance college and career readiness. Montclair is committed to continuous improvement and shares in the belief that all children can achieve at high levels through rigorous curricula aligned with the national Common Core State Standards and innovative programs.

The magnet system of integrated schools represents a strong, diverse and vibrant community of learners and serves nearly 6,700 students. A pioneer in the magnet school concept, Montclair has, for over 30 years, offered parents a choice of school best suited to their child's individual talents and needs. Some, for instance, emphasize arts and science; others feature science and technology or visual and performing arts. Montclair children do not necessarily attend the school closest to their homes. There are no "neighborhood" schools. Provided there is space available and that a balance of children from various economic zones is maintained, the magnet schools provide wide flexibility of educational choice, and ensure that the entire township is the "neighborhood."

The district has received numerous distinctions including the Quality New Jersey Governor's Award for Performance Excellence; a U.S. Department of Education distinction as one of six exemplary magnet school programs in the nation; a Newsweek recognition as one of the Top 1,000 schools in the nation; a New Jersey Monthly rating for being among the Top 100 high schools in the state, and national Blue Ribbon designations at three of our elementary schools.

Montclair makes a concerted effort to involve community members as partners in the educational process. School Action Teams for Partnerships bring key stakeholders together at each school to plan school-level initiatives. The Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE), an independent local foundation, promotes community engagement while raising significant funds each year to support program innovations, teacher professional development, and summer enrichment scholarships for needy youngsters. The district is also fortunate to be supported by a number of community institutions that are committed to the common goal of helping all of Montclair's students succeed, including Montclair State University, the YMCA and the Montclair Art Museum.
