POMPTON LAKES BORO (31-4230-050)

Set in a quaint lakeside community that is rich in pride and tradition, Pompton Lakes High School (PLHS) serves both the boroughs of Pompton Lakes and Riverdale. The close harmony among students, teachers, families, and school leaders provides a comfortable, friendly learning environment that is appreciated by all.

Pompton Lakes High School takes pride in providing vast opportunities to meet the needs of its diverse student population. A rigorous and comprehensive academic program is complemented by extensive co-curricular activities, championship interscholastic athletic teams, and an award-winning fine arts program. In addition to providing required courses of study, PLHS offers a myriad of elective courses, including Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Web Design, Broadcast Journalism and Multimedia Production, Mythology, Sociology, Current Events, International Business, Personal Law, Three-dimensional Design, Mixed Media, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), High Tech Music, and Introduction to Education. Fifteen Advanced Placement (AP) courses, fourteen honors courses, and 3 world languages round out a solid program of studies.

In addition to presenting a strong curricular program, Pompton Lakes High School affords its students the opportunity to engage in a plethora of club and athletic activities. An impressive 90% of students choose to take advantage of this opportunity. PLHS offers 28 extracurricular activities, organizations, and societies, including student government, publications, service groups, and club sports. An esteemed member of the highly competitive North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC), PLHS hosts 22 male and female varsity sports teams. The storied history of Pompton athletics is depicted by the many state championship banners that adorn the gymnasium, along with a creditable record of sportsmanship of which the school community is particularly proud. An award-winning music program includes a marching band, concert band, and choir that have performed and competed in Disney World, Lake George, Boston, and most recently New York City. A jazz band, spring musical cast and pit orchestra, and men's and women's choral ensembles round out this considerable program. To bolster its extensive fine arts program, PLHS recently added the Anti-Bullying Fine Arts Showcase and a fall drama to its slate of premier events. It is also remarkable that, recognized as one of the best in New Jersey, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group has consistently excelled on a national level, most recently in Chicago, IL.

Pompton Lakes High School students continue to meet rigorous standards and bring acclaim to their alma mater. State assessment results for the 144-member Class of 2015 exceeded the performance goal of 90% proficiency, the highest target rate a New Jersey high school may be assigned. The average composite SAT score for this class also exceeded the national average. The Class of 2015 posted an extraordinary 98.6% graduation rate and was offered over $6 million in scholarships for further education at a vast number of colleges and universities throughout the country. More than 40% of this class also earned college credits prior to graduation.

Pride and tradition reign at PLHS, yet exciting changes abound. The high school has been recognized as a New Jersey Choice School by successfully establishing two specialized programs in addition to AP through which students can earn college credits. By participating in Seton Hall University's Project Acceleration, students can earn college credits in seven courses taught at the high school by distinguished faculty members; by participating in PLHS' Challenger Program, students may attend college classes on the Wanaque campus of Passaic County Community College. PLHS recently implemented curriculum advances in English, mathematics, science, and music. Furthermore, it has galvanized 21st century instruction and learning via school-owned wireless-enabled portable devices; state-of-the-art computer (PC and Mac) laboratories; and Apple iPad, SMART, Interwrite Mobi, and PASCO SPARK technologies. Other enhancements of note at the high school include a modernized design shop; contemporary science facilities; new heating, cooling, security, and locker systems; and a widely used co-educational weight training facility.

The enthusiasm and positivism that encompass Pompton Lakes High School are not limited to the students and faculty alone. Heightened and sustained involvement in the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and booster clubs demonstrates the dedication of the parents in this community. Families express their pride in the school and its traditions. Attendance at activities and games, both home and away, is remarkable. Furthermore, local businesses, families, and organizations willingly and enthusiastically recognize student achievement in all areas. This verity is most notably represented by the substantial annual contributions made toward the school's scholarship program.

Today, very few local parents enroll their children in non-public institutions; instead they choose to stay within the district. Moreover, some non-resident parents have elected to enroll their children at PLHS through the New Jersey Interdistrict Public School Choice Program. Thus, families recognize the great opportunities available at Pompton Lakes High School, the crown jewel of a highly spirited town.
