HILLSIDE TWP

"Providing every student, every learning opportunity, every day."

The Hillside Public School District is a vibrant Pre-K - 12 District located in Union County, New Jersey. Nestled between several larger school districts, Elizabeth, Newark, Irvington and Union Township, we strive to provide our students with a learning environment that is engaging and respectful of all cultures. Our mission statement represents our commitment to strong parent-community school partnerships aimed at providing a safe, and effective learning environment which supports a comprehensive system of academic and developmental support to meet the unique needs of the individual.

Students are the primary focus of Hillside Public Schools. Approximately 3,200 students are enrolled in the district's schools, which include four elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. The District recognizes that each student is unique; therefore our efforts are directed toward identifying and satisfying individual needs of every student. Accordingly, we encourage diversity and flexibility in our programs to meet their needs.

Our schools offer a strong foundation in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and health. Spanish, art, music and physical education classes begin in kindergarten. Our instrumental and gifted and talented programs begin in grade three. The English-as-a-Second Language program begins in kindergarten and our Special Education programs are available for children beginning at age three.

The past two years brought many exciting changes to the district. Our elementary schools have implemented Everyday Mathematics 4, a mathematics program revised to support the Common Core Standards. Our Guided Reading program is being supplemented with an emphasis on Close Reading. We are strengthening our Writer's Workshop program by providing additional professional development support for staff and we are increasing our focus of integrating technology into the instructional program by providing additional support for teachers and additional devices for students.

Our facility needs continue to change as our academic focus strengthens. As a result, the district will add four additional classrooms and a state of the arts gymnasium to George Washington Elementary School. Starting September, 2016 grades seven and eight will be housed at George Washington and it will no longer host an elementary program. The district will undergo a reorganization slated to better serve the students of Hillside.

The District works to attract and retain the best educators. We offer a robust professional development program which includes a year-long induction seminar and a generous tuition reimbursement benefit. We strive to be a community of lifelong learners focused on developing that characteristic in the students we teach.

As shared, our motto is .....Providing every student every learning opportunity every day. The school board and the entire staff strive to meet that motto daily. The community of Hillside, the school board members and the staff remain committed to providing students with an outstanding education that will prepare them for college, careers and beyond.
