Statement by Governor Murphy on Trump Administration’s Decision to Drop Citizenship Question from Printed 2020 Census Form

07/2/2019

“President Trump’s ill-fated quest to include the citizenship question has always been a thinly-veiled attempt to intimidate diverse states like New Jersey. I thank all of those who joined us in standing up to the bullying, and all of those who will join us in celebrating the diverse communities that call New Jersey home.

“I am pleased that this unconscionable and discriminatory attack on our country’s civic processes has come to an end, so that we can get to work on an effective and complete 2020 Census in order to ensure the fair political representation and federal funding that New Jerseyans so deeply deserve. I’d also like to thank Attorney General Grewal and Secretary of State Way for their tireless efforts to ensure a fair and complete count.

“As I have said, for those who seek to come to our shores to secure a better life for themselves and their families, New Jersey’s doors will continue to remain open.”
