ICYMI: NJMVC Wins International Award for Partnership with the Office of First Lady Tammy Murphy

05/24/2022

TRENTON – The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has won an international award recognizing its partnership with the Office of First Lady Tammy Murphy in bringing motor vehicle services directly to underserved communities at Family Festivals around New Jersey (see link to photos at bottom).

The NJMVC is proud to announce it is the recipient of the 2022 Excellence in Government Partnership Award from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). This annual award recognizes a successful project coordinated between a motor vehicle or law enforcement agency and a public or private sector partner that makes government services more convenient or efficient, serving as a model for other jurisdictions.

This award was granted in both Regional and International categories, marking the first time the NJMVC has won an International Award from AAMVA.

“I am honored to join MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton in accepting the Excellence in Government Partnership Service Award,” said First Lady of New Jersey Tammy Snyder Murphy. “Together, in partnership with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), we have served thousands of pregnant mothers at our Family Festivals. These festivals connect families with valuable state, county, and local resources related to their healthcare needs. I look forward to continuing this mission with Chief Fulton and her MVC team as we seek to expand access to convenient, high-quality, and equitable healthcare resources for New Jersey families.”

“We are very grateful to have our partnership with the First Lady recognized with this AAMVA International Award,” said Sue Fulton, NJMVC Chief Administrator. “Delivering motor vehicle services in innovative and more convenient ways, like with our Mobile Units, is at the core of what drives us at NJMVC. Working with First Lady Tammy Murphy has been very rewarding, and we thank her and her team for their tireless efforts to better serve and elevate families across our great state.”

As First Lady, Tammy Murphy's policy initiatives have centered on infant and maternal health, climate change education, and fostering women-owned businesses throughout New Jersey. To bolster these initiatives, the First Lady has hosted several Family Festivals across the state to improve access to resources for mothers, children, and families.

Since 2019, the Office of the First Lady has coordinated with the NJMVC to bring motor vehicle services directly to the Family Festivals, using the Commission’s two Mobile Units to provide non-driver IDs, driver license renewals, and other services to attendees.

This partnership is part of the NJMVC’s larger Mobile Unit program, which uses the two “Mini Agencies” to crisscross the Garden State delivering motor vehicle services directly to New Jerseyans in their communities. Mobile Unit events and visits are typically coordinated by NJMVC with partners in local and state government, the Legislature, and civic groups that serve veterans, senior citizens, and other underserved populations.

AAMVA’s awards program aims to foster a tradition of excellence in the motor vehicle and law enforcement community by honoring excellence in safety initiatives, customer service, public affairs, and consumer education programs throughout North America.

The 2022 Excellence in Government Partnership Award will be officially presented to the NJMVC at AAMVA’s Annual International Conference in Baltimore, MD this September.

The NJMVC also won a 2022 AAMVA Regional Award in the Interactive Presentation category for its series of virtual community meetings held in English and Spanish on how residents, regardless of immigration status, can obtain a standard New Jersey driver license. These presentations have been delivered at more than a dozen virtual community outreach events, reaching an audience of over 50,000 individuals interested in learning more about each step of the state’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) process.

The NJMVC has been a regular recipient of AAMVA awards in recent years, including winning four Regional Awards in 2021.
