The Rise and Fall of Drive-Ins

New Jersey Drive-In Theaters

New Jersey Drive-In Theaters
March 2004

After the first drive-in opened in 1933, more than forty drive-in theaters were opened over the years throughout New Jersey. The Newark Drive-In, with spaces for 2,400 cars, was the fifth largest drive-in theater in the nation. New Jersey's last drive-in theater, Hazlet's Route 35 Drive-In, closed in 1991. The list below names most of the drive-ins in New Jersey.

Now, more than a decade after the last drive-in in the state closed, there are plans to open a drive-in theater in Wall Township. The Wall Drive-In Theatre, located at the Wall Township Speedway, would be open from April to October when the racetrack is not in use. The owners plan to have parking for 650 vehicles with an 80-foot screen. Sound will be provided through car radios.
