In 2011, the Department of Health solicited parties interested in establishing Alternative Treatment Centers (ATCs) under the Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act. Six ATC applicants were selected to move forward in the permitting process. These entities are Greenleaf Compassion Center, Harmony Foundation, Breakwater ATC, Compassionate Care Research Institute (doing business as Garden State Dispensary), Compassionate Science ATC, Inc. and Compassionate Care Foundation, Inc. Once the initial six ATCs are operational, the state will evaluate the program and determine whether there is a need for expansion. If the state identifies a need for additional ATCs, the Department will publicize the expansion and provide the criteria and process for application.
Each ATC is required to submit an annual renewal application and the Department has established a permitting process to review thoroughly the financial and personal backgrounds of the principals associated with each ATC. The current annual permit for each facility is listed below.
