The National Service Leader Schools Program

The Corporation for National Service is pleased to introduce a new Presidential awards initiative - the National Service Leaders Schools Program. In 1998, its pilot year, the program will recognize up to 100 high schools that have done an exemplary job of integrating students service into the curriculum and the life of the school.

What Types of Schools Will Be Selected?
A National Service Leader School must have established, broad-based service learning activities taking place throughout the school. There are many ways to effectively incorporate service into a school's curriculum and culture. National Service Leader Schools should demonstrate service-learning that enhance student learning, meets the needs of the community, is well integrated into the life of the school, and is designed to foster civic responsibility.

What Will National Service Leader Schools Do?
The National Service Leader Schools Program is not simply an awards program. Schools that are selected as National Service Leader Schools will serve as active winners, assisting other schools and contributing to the advancement of service learning throughout the country. The selected schools will serve as leaders for a period of two years. During that time, the National Service Leader Schools will serve as models for other schools-locally, regionally, and nationally. They will lead, mentor, and coach other schools by sharing materials, making presentations, or participating in peer exchanges. Additionally, the National Service Leader Schools will comprise a network of educators who can learn from one another and further develop their school's leadership.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?
In this pilot year, all high schools in the United States, U.S. territories, and Indian tribes that serve any combination of grades 9 through 12 are eligible to apply.
