2010 Science Teaching Excellence Program and Institute
(STEP I) Dear teachers. Thank you for your participation in the Science Teaching
Excellence Program and Institute (STEP I). Please
follow the steps below to complete an online evaluation form, construct a lesson, and request in-class support. Lessons
will be posted online to encourage an exchange of ideas, resources, and
best practices amongst a professional learning community. Once lessons are available online, you will
be notified via e-mail. If you
have any questions, contact Kilpatry Cuesta at

UP will process your stipend as soon as you complete the institute,
submit your online workshop evaluation form, and e-mail your lesson. STEP I: (evaluation form and lesson due no later than STEP I: New Jersey Institute of Technology: November 13 & 20, 2010 (evaluation form and lesson due no later than STEP 1: ONLINE

Complete template, save, and send as an attachment
to Ms. Kilpatry Cuesta at kilpatrycuesta@comcast.net. A lesson
can address any of the following content strands: ecology/environmental
science, life science, anatomy and health, and habits of science. Click here to download a copy of the lesson template. STEP 3 (Optional/Recommended):
IN-CLASS SUPPORT The program component
of STEP I is a school-based initiative designed
to give teachers on-site support for science teaching excellence that
builds teacher efficacy as reflected by consistent demonstration of science
content knowledge and pedagogical skills. STEP I presenters will travel to participants’ classrooms
for observation and provide feedback on the STEP I core of knowledge.
In a non-evaluative summary, teachers will have opportunities to collaborate
with the content specialist to develop lessons that support the program
goals and expectations. To schedule
a visit, please send a request with available dates to one of the following
presenters. The presenter will
contact you within a week to finalize the schedule. In-class
support is at no cost to the teacher, school, or district. Presenter:
Ms. Keturah Monroe Keturah Monroe
is Executive Director for O.U.R.S.E.P.,
a community science enrichment initiative currently serving children
in the Greater Trenton area and Baltimore (MD). She has a BS from Morgan
State University (MD). She has taught K-12 science in traditional classroom
as well as community-based programs. In partnership with various organizations,
she has successfully instituted a science program that allows students
to explore science through travel and community service and conduct field
