• Responsible for awarding funding to community prevention and early intervention providers for prevention education, resources, & early intervention services to enhance residents’ capacity to make healthy life choices.
• Monitors over $14 million in funding to contracted provider agencies that offer prevention education and early intervention services to residents in all 21 counties of the State.
• Contracts are awarded to public and private agencies based on a statewide/county-specific assessment of needs.  Contracts are awarded to prevention agencies that are mandated to use evidence-based curricula (including Strengthening Families Programs) in the provision of prevention services.
• Participates in prevention unification needs assessment, RFP development, and funding allocations.

• In 2006, DAS was awarded $10,465,000 in grant funding to be utilized over a five year period to promote and provide outcome based prevention services to the citizens of New Jersey.  The main priority of SPF-SIG is to reduce the harmful consequences of alcohol and drug use among 18-25 year olds.  This grant is intended to build a prevention infrastructure at the state and local level to reduce substance abuse risk factors and to increase protective factors.  Underage and childhood drinking initiatives support each targeted community toward these objectives.  Sustainability and cultural competence are supported by ongoing assessment, capacity building, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Recovery Support and Environmental Strategies to Prevent and Reduce Substance Abuse on College Campuses:

• This initiative awards funds to colleges or universities to provide recovery support and/or environmental prevention strategies to systematically identify and help students who have a substance use disorder (SUD) diagnosis as well as those who intermittently abuse AODs.
• Each college or university is required to provide individual and group substance abuse recovery-oriented programs and services, to provide assessment, academic, and personal counseling services to students, and/or offer recovery-based housing for students.  Environmental Management strategies seek to reduce the supply of and demand for AODs by making them less available and their use less acceptable within the campus environment. 

New Initiatives OPS:

• Through its recent RFP, now provides AOD prevention services to at-risk populations that have not historically been served, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning youth, military personnel and their families, as well as providing cultural competence programming.
