        -News Release-

ATLANTIC CITY, July 12, 2011  --  Commissioner Harold J. Wirths of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development spoke today at the New Jersey State Building and Construction Trades Council (NJBCTC) 107th Annual Convention in Atlantic City, announcing his approval of $760,000 in grants for the NJBUILD program.

Otherwise known as The New Jersey Builders Utilization Initiative for Labor Diversity, the program is one of several in the state aimed at training women and minorities in the construction trades.

Standing before 150 union members gathered inside the Palladium Ballroom at Caesar’s Atlantic City hotel and casino, Commissioner Wirths said the administration of Governor Chris Christie and Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno has been working to create jobs by making the state more business friendly.

“We are keenly aware the employment decline in construction has been more severe and longer lasting for the state’s economy as a whole. But it would be a major mistake for anyone to count the building and construction trades out,” said Commissioner Wirths. “Construction led us out of past recessions. It can still help to lead the way again. The construction industry sector in New Jersey remains vital to our economy.”
