The work included the Commissioner cutting down a storm-damaged tree last week on the Stine Farm, a park where the Youth Corps has been restoring an old farmhouse and removing debris.
Commissioner Wirths and his family also delivered hams over the weekend from a local supermarket to the Sussex Help Center in Sussex Borough, where they packaged holiday dinners that were handed out to needy families.
All cabinet officials in the Christie administration are spending time volunteering and highlighting service opportunities as part of the “Season of Service” announced by Governor and First Lady Christie on Thanksgiving Eve. The initiative builds on the same commitment to community the Governor emphasized in his 2010 inaugural address with members of the cabinet volunteering their time in a variety of ways through the end of December.
A “Season of Service” was inspired by 8-year-old Aidan McManus of Burlington Township, who has demonstrated compassion and desire to improve the lives of others in his community.
The Youth Corps, created 1984, serves young men and women, ages 16 to 25, who dropped out of school. The program enables the youths to obtain a GED while they are trained in certain trades, ranging from forestry to carpentry. Some receive certificates for operating machinery, such as chain saws.
The Youth Corps also performs service and conservation work for the Town of Phillipsburg and Warren County. Since 2001, the program has sold Christmas trees, wreaths, grave blankets and center pieces which they make on site at the Youth Corps’ Phillipsburg headquarters.
