An estimated 30 employers set up interview stations to recruit people for 750 available positions. More than 125 veterans and vet family members attended the event at the Army National Guard Armory to investigate the offers and attend free seminars for job-seekers on resume writing and how to conduct an effective job search for government jobs.
"My department will continue to hold job fairs like the one today and other special veteran hiring events, as we did last year, to provide as many job and career opportunities as possible for our former military personnel and their family members," said Labor Commissioner Harold J. Wirths. "Veterans are tested leaders who have successfully used their leadership skills in the most difficult of situations, and they deserve our full support when they return home."
The Ocean County Workforce Investment Board, Ocean County Veterans Services Bureau, VFW Post 6063, and American Legion Post 124 co-hosted the job fair.
Veterans unable to make today’s event have another opportunity on April 25, 2013, when LWD will partner once again with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for a "Hiring Our Heroes" job fair in Camden from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Susquehanna Bank Center.
"My department has helped to match hundreds of employers with thousands of veterans in the past, getting many former service people into jobs," said Wirths. "We will continue to build on the success of events like today to help New Jersey veterans find opportunities to help them transition into new careers."
LWD has organized numerous events targeted toward veteran hiring. Under Governor Chris Christie’s Operation: Hire a Jersey Hero initiative, the department organized a symposium held at Prudential’s headquarters in Newark that focused on connecting employers with state and federal resources that can help them hire veterans. LWD also organized a veteran-specific job fair last May on board the USS New Jersey (Battleship NJ) in Camden where 350 veterans and military spouses had an opportunity to meet with 50 employers who had a combined 2,800 available positions to fill.
LWD and the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs have joined with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion and other sponsors to support several Hiring Our Heroes events from Toms River, Flemington and Somerville to Trenton. In fact, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce declared the Trenton Hiring Our Heroes job fair, held last September at the Sun National Bank Center, the largest Hiring Our Heroes job fair it has held in the nation. More than 700 veterans attended and over 120 employers participated in the event.
