TRENTON, N.J., March 4, 2015 _ Keith Kelly, Assistant Secretary of the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) at the U.S. Department of Labor, visited the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development today, where he met with Labor Commissioner Harold J. Wirths before joining a roundtable discussion on veteran programs with state labor officials, the state Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (DMAVA) and other agencies assisting veterans and military members.

Commissioner Wirths, Deputy Commissioner Aaron Fichtner and DMAVA’s Deputy Commissioner Raymond Zawacki greeted Assistant Secretary Kelly before the one-hour roundtable discussion, which included members of the state Department of Labor’s Workforce Development staff, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Assistant Secretary Kelly’s office focuses on veterans’ employment by preparing military service members for transition to civilian jobs, providing services to assist veterans obtain employment and by protecting their employment rights. His visit to New Jersey will include a tour tomorrow of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

During the roundtable, New Jersey authorities outlined the many programs designed to assist veterans in need, including employment initiatives spearheaded by more than 40 veteran representatives at the state Department of Labor, many of whom are also veterans and former military personnel. Those representatives will participate in several veteran-focused employment events planned by various Garden State partners in the next three months, including:

March 16, 2015: 2015 Newark Veterans Job Fair, GI Go Fund, Rutgers University, Paul Robeson Campus Center, 350 Martin Luther King Blvd., Newark, N.J., 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

March 19, 2015: Veteran Career Fair & Military Expo, Student Recreation Center, Rider University, 2083 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, N.J., 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

April 17, 2015: Be a Hero Hire a Hero Spring Veterans Career Expo, Berkeley College, Woodland Park Campus, Berkeley College, 44 Rifle Camp Road, Woodland Park, N.J., 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

April 30, 2015:  Military Service Member, Guard, Reserve & Veteran Job and Resource Fair With Career Workshops, Lawrenceville Armory, 151 Eggerts Crossing Rd. Lawrenceville, N.J., 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

May 6, 2015: 2015 Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair, Susquehanna National Bank Center, One Harbour Boulevard, Camden, N.J., 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
