For Your Information

N.J.A.C. 13:45A-12.3 establishes practices related to the health of animals and fitness for sale and purchase. The regulation sets forth four options for consumers who have bought an animal that is certified as unfit for purchase by a licensed veterinarian. This certification must be made any time within 14 days following the sale and delivery of an animal for a non-congenital cause or condition or within six months for a congenital or hereditary cause of condition. The consumer has the option of: returning the animal and being reimbursed the purchase price and veterinary fees; retaining the animal and being reimbursed for incurred veterinary costs and future veterinary costs for curing the animal; returning the animal, receiving a replacement animal of equivalent value, and reimbursement of veterinary fees; or, if the animal has died, a refund of the purchase price or a replacement animal, and reimbursement of veterinary fees.
