Law Enforcement Services Section
The Division's Police Services Section assists local law enforcement by combining the development of law enforcement policy and standards for the operation of law enforcement agencies and performance of police functions with the provision of technical assistance to address specific needs within individual municipal police departments. Standards and operational guidelines are developed in areas such as police internal affairs, the handling of citizen complaints and police vehicular pursuit. These standards and guidelines serve as a means of implementing legislation, Attorney General directives, and other applicable policies and are intended to promote uniform and effective law enforcement and efficient police administration.
The Police Services Section is responsible for publishing the New Jersey Law Enforcement Guidelines, a compilation of existing directives and guidelines pertaining to police agencies in New Jersey. The Guidelines are intended to serve as a convenient resource for all law enforcement and law enforcement personnel throughout New Jersey and are available on the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice website on the Internet.
The Law Enforcement Agency Standards program, developed in conjunction with the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association, is designed to assist police executives effectively organize and manage the operation of their departments to provide quality police services and address community needs. This voluntary program consists of standards in areas of department operations of critical concern and in which clear management direction is essential to effective police services such as policy management, records management, communications, personnel practices, and media relations.
In addition to assisting individual police agencies during the implementation of standards issued, the Police Services Section staff conduct a police management training program based on standards developed, provide management and technical assistance, and conduct management studies of individual police departments or agencies upon request.
