Advisory
Attorney
General Harvey, N.J. Hospital Association
to Announce Joint Effort to Improve Hospital
Accommodations for Deaf, Hard of Hearing
1
p.m. Monday, December 5, 2005
|
 |
WHAT:
Addressing an important health
care concern for persons with hearing
loss, Attorney General Peter C. Harvey
and the New Jersey Hospital Association
(NJHA) will announce a joint initiative
designed to ensure that patients who are
deaf or hard of hearing are provided --
by hospitals – with assistance that
ensures their ability to communicate effectively
with nurses, doctors and other hospital
personnel. Required by law, this “reasonable
accommodation” may include such
services as qualified sign language interpreters,
amplified phones and computer-assisted
real time transcription. Owing to a number
of factors, the provision of services
to help deaf and hard of hearing persons
communicate with hospital staff has been
inconsistent throughout the New Jersey
hospital community.
