Boating Safety Courses Taught In New Jersey
The Division of State Police Marine Services Bureau reviews and approves boating safety courses taught in New Jersey. The regulations about course requirements are NJAC 13:61-1.1 through 1.10 and are currently due for review and updates. Part of this review process includes public comment. Copies of the proposed changes and re-adoption are published in the New Jersey Register at cite 37 N.J.R. 1684 (a). The Register is available at most public libraries. Some of the proposed additions to the course requirements include checking for local hazards, and using a pre-departure checklist. The course will also explain about conducting a safety discussion before leaving the dock so that boaters know how to use the life jackets, what to do if someone falls overboard, the boat capsizes, or how to summon help in an emergency. Discussion during the course about carbon monoxide poisoning awareness and operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will also be required. Anyone may comment about the changes and re-adoption to the regulations by writing to: Colonel Joseph R. Fuentes, SuperintendentDivision of State Police
