| The State Athletic Control Board was established by the Legislature in 1985. After its establishment, Gerard Gormley was one of the initial nominees to the newly created three member Board. Gormley has served as a member of the Board since January 1986.
In 1986, Gormley was named Chairman of the State Athletic Control Board. He has served as the first and the only Chairman of the State Athletic Control Board. In January 2002, the position of Chairman was converted from a part-time to a full-time position. Therefore, since January, Gormley has served as the first full-time Chairman of the State Athletic Control Board.
Chairman Gormley became interested in the sport of boxing at a young age. His father, Gerard Sr., the former sheriff in Atlantic County, was involved with the training of various professional boxers over several decades. Legendary boxers such as former heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott trained at the Gormley family farm.
Since his nomination to the Board, Gormley has been instrumental in obtaining discounted prices for the medical tests required of boxers and martial artists in order to obtain a license and compete in New Jersey.
As Chairman, Gormley has approved and established numerous regulatory proposals which have vastly improved the conduct of the sport of professional boxing in New Jersey. Gormley has also overseen proposals to regulate mixed martial arts and extreme wrestling events.
Gormley operated the Midway Inn in Buena Township for 36 years. Gormley is married, has one son and resides in Ventnor. | |
