Top Four MVC Customer Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Many MVC customers make easily avoidable mistakes that cause them significant problems, including repeated trips to agencies and other delays.  Because we see customers make these mistakes over and over again, we are issuing this list of the top four MVC mistakes and how to avoid them.

  1. Not bringing the proper documentation to MVC agencies
  2. This can be as simple as not having proof of auto insurance required to register a vehicle or not having sufficient funds to pay for a license renewal.  Be prepared and check for information on what is required for your visit.

  3. Not providing 6 Points of ID
  4. 6 Point ID Verification is designed to help prevent identity theft by ensuring that licenses are only issued with proper legal documents and verification. Certain documents such as passports or birth certificates are worth four points, while others such as marriage licenses and college IDs are worth less.  Additionally, transactions that require 6 Points of ID require proof of address.  Visit for more information on 6 Point ID verification, as well as a 6 Point ID document selector tool.

  5. Not taking advantage of online services or “Skip the Trip”
  6. Did you know that the MVC has more than 20 services available online, including vehicle registration renewal and address change?  Or that more than 2 million eligible customers have renewed their driver’s license by mail through our “Skip the Trip” program without ever having to visit an agency?  Visit to learn more about how you may be able to save time and conduct your MVC transactions from the comfort of your own home.

  7. Waiting until the last minute
  8. As human beings, we all have a tendency to procrastinate.  This can cause problems at the MVC, as our agencies tend to be busiest at the beginning and end of the month as people’s licenses, registrations and other documents expire.  Avoid the crowds and visit us mid-month and mid-week for the lowest wait times, or better yet – refer to #4 and conduct your MVC business through the mail or online.
