Agricultural License

With an Agricultural License, a driver age 16 or 17 may only operate farm vehicles: vehicles registered under the provisions of N.J.S.A. 39:3-24 (farm tractors and traction equipment – “Farm Use”) or N.J.S.A. 39:3-25 (“Farmer”). You are also subject to the following restrictions:
  • No driving between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
  • When driving a farm truck registered pursuant to N.J.S.A. 39:4-24 or 4-25 on public roads, the driver must be accompanied by an Adult Supervising Driver (at least 21 years old and licensed to drive for at least 3 years) in the front seat (does not apply to farm tractors or traction equipment).
  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times (except in farm tractors or traction equipment).
  • Passengers shall be limited to persons who share the permit holder's residence and one additional passenger who does not reside with the permit holder.
  • You can't use cell phones, handheld video games, or other handheld electronic device.

Get Your Initial Permit

Make an appointment for a Permit.
Download form BA-208 and fill it out. It must be signed by a parent or guardian. Bring your BA-208 and your documents and get your permit. (Always bring your documents with you when you come in for a visit).

ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR PERMIT, YOU HAVE 2 YEARS TO FINISH STEPS 1-4, OR YOU MUST GET A NEW PERMIT

Step 1 Image
Take Your Knowledge Test

Make an appointment for a Knowledge Test.
Bring your documents and take your knowledge test.
You will also be required to take a vision test.

IF YOU FAIL, you can re-test in 7 days.
IF YOU PASS, your permit will be validated, and you can go to the next step.

Step 2 Image
Schedule your Road Test.

Make an appointment for your road test for at least 20 days after you pass your knowledge test.

 
Step 3 Image
Take Your Road Test.

Your road test vehicle MUST have agricultural plates.
IF YOU FAIL, you can re-test in 14 days.
IF YOU PASS, your permit will be stamped, and you can go to the next step.

Step 4 Image
Get your Agricultural Driver’s License.

You can either get your Agricultural Driver’s License at the location of your road test (if available), or at any Licensing Center with your stamped permit and your documents – no appointment necessary.

Once you are 17 years old,
you can make an appointment for a Permit/License to exchange your Agricultural License
for a regular probationary driver’s license.
One year later, you can upgrade that probationary license online to a regular driver’s license.
