Jersey City MVC Center Closed Until Feb. 24

TRENTON – The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) has announced that the Jersey City Vehicle Center is closed due to an employee testing positive for COVID-19, and will reopen Wednesday, Feb. 24.

The employee who tested positive was last in the agency Tuesday, Feb. 9.

MVC Centers Reopening

The following MVC Centers will reopen after full COVID-19 cleaning and the completion of staff quarantine. They had to close because an employee tested positive for COVID-19 at each location, and are scheduled to reopen on these dates:

West Deptford Regional/Licensing Center

Tuesday, Feb. 16

North Bergen Licensing Center

Thursday, Feb. 18

Turnersville Vehicle Center

Monday, Feb. 22

Jersey City Vehicle Center

Wednesday, Feb. 24

MVC Online

Many customers can skip the trip to the MVC by going online. Nearly 30 different Motor Vehicle Commission services and transactions are available for customers online at This includes most standard license and registration renewals and replacements.

Over the last two months, more than 80% of standard license renewals and 90% of vehicle registration renewals were completed without an in-person MVC visit.

MVC In-Person

Walk-ins are only allowed for first time licenses/IDs/permits, name changes, and red decals at Licensing Centers.

Scheduling an Appointment

Appointments at Licensing and Vehicle Centers must be scheduled at Additional appointments are being added daily, overnight, and up to 60 days in advance. Customers should check multiple MVC locations online after midnight to best secure an appointment.

Appointment Cancellations

Any appointments canceled due to an MVC location closure must be rescheduled on the website. Customers will get an email when their appointment has been canceled.

If a customer can’t make their appointment, it should be canceled using the guidance in the confirmation email sent by the MVC upon booking, in order to open the appointment for others.


License/ID and registration renewals that can’t be completed online require an appointment. Renewals are not available on a walk-in basis.
