New NJMVC Licensing Center Opens in Elizabeth
Grand Opening Set for Wednesday, Oct. 13

TRENTON – The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission today announced the opening of a brand new Licensing Center in Elizabeth, located at 17 Caldwell Place. The opening of the Elizabeth Licensing Center marks the long-awaited return of NJMVC services to the city of Elizabeth after a previous agency located at a different address was closed in 2010.

The new Elizabeth Licensing Center is conveniently located near mass transit with parking available in an adjacent garage on Caldwell Place.

“We are thrilled to return to Elizabeth and expand in-person services for customers in Union County and nearby communities,” said NJMVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton. “Opening a new agency in one of our busiest areas of the state gives customers improved access to NJMVC licensing services, helping us better meet the growing demand for them.”

A Grand Opening in Elizabeth is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 13, with more details to be announced soon.

The new Elizabeth Licensing Center includes:

  • total area of 7,000 square feet
  • 10 service windows for licensing transactions
  • 4 ID Check windows
  • 16 driver knowledge testing stations
  • ability to process more than 1,000 transactions per week
  • creation of 45 full and part-time jobs

The following services are offered at the Elizabeth Licensing Center by appointment only:

  • first-time driver licenses, non-driver IDs, and permits
  • REAL IDs
  • Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs)

  • name changes
  • gender marker changes
  • red decal purchases
  • parking placards (with mail-in options at NJMVC.gov)

A limited number of appointments have been serviced this week in Elizabeth as operations are phased in and staffing ramps up.

Appointments can be scheduled online only at NJMVC.gov Customers should not call or show up to any NJMVC location seeking an appointment.

Elizabeth will offer licensing services only. Vehicle transactions, including registration and title work, are not available at Licensing Centers.

For vehicle services, customers should make an appointment at a Vehicle Center on NJMVC.gov, where appointments are widely available across the state within a few days.

Customers are reminded that they should always visit NJMVC.gov first to learn more about how best to access NJMVC services. Almost 80% of all NJMVC transactions can be completed online, including nearly all license and registration renewals.
