OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This nine hour course will prepare physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and registered nurses, to safely and effectively approach and treat patients that have exposed to a Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) and/or have been involved in a Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) event. Preparation, decontamination, PPE, common biological, chemical and nuclear agents will be discussed along with their presentation and management.

At the completion of the activity the participants will be able to:

  • Improve their skill of emergency response
  • Increase knowledge of identifying and properly treating victims of Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) exposure and/or a Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) event (nuclear, biological, chemical attack)
  • Discuss types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Understand the appropriate use of PPE and patient decontamination procedures


ACCREDITATION

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through a joint sponsorship of the UNDNJ - Center for Continuing and Outreach Education (CCOE) and the New Jersey State Police.

The UMDNJ - CCOE is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians and takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of the CME activity.

The UMDNJ - CCOE designates this educational activity for a maximum of 9.0 hours in Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
