Washington, D.C., September 18, 2001 -- Victims of the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks may be eligible for a wide
variety of federal benefits from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Justice
(DOJ) and other state and federal agencies with special
programs for victims of crime.
Under the Victims of Crime Act, administered by DOJ
through the state where the crime occurred, victims
can be compensated for such things as medical bills,
mental health counseling, funeral expenses, lost wages
and loss of support.
To apply for this assistance from New York, call 1-800-247-8035
or go to www.cvb.state.ny.us. Victims from the Pentagon
attack can apply for compensation by calling 877-372-0127
or 1-800 552-4007. Pentagon victims can call 804-378-3434.
Victims of the Pennsylvania plane crash should call
1-800-692-7292 (in state) or 717-783-5135 or go to www.pccd.state.pa.us
to apply for assistance.
Residents of New York who need temporary housing due
to the terrorist attacks or who have suffered losses
of personal property can register with FEMA's toll-free
registration line: 1-800-462-9029. Disaster unemployment,
disaster legal services and information and referral
are also available for New York victims through that
number.
Businesses should seek assistance through the U.S. Small
Business Administration by calling 1-800-659-2955.
Other benefits available to crime victims affected by
the terrorist attacks may be available through the DOJ's
Office of Victims of Crime at 1-800-331-0075. Those
outside the United States can call collect at 414-979-4800.

Families of firefighters and police officers killed
by the attacks may receive financial and emotional assistance
under the Public Safety Officers Benefits Program Act.

officers should call 212-741-4626.
