Enforcement:
State officials will announce efforts
underway this Summer to deter underage
drinking throughout shore resort areas
in New Jersey. Efforts include the Cops
in Shops program, an initiative developed
by The Century Council, in which local
police officers work undercover in liquor
stores to prevent underage purchases.
Undercover efforts with County Prosecutors’
Offices, State ABC investigators and
local police that target underage drinkers
in bars and nightclubs will also be
discussed. Additionally, TV Public Service
Announcements on underage drinking recently
taped by Attorney General Harvey will
be available to members of the broadcast
media. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s
Office will also have “Fatal Vision
Goggles,” which simulate the effects
of alcohol, available for demonstrations.
Additionally, the number of arrests
made as a result of the ABC’s
2004-2005 College Underage Drinking
Initiative will be released.
Public Awareness and Education:
The ABC, in cooperation with the Partnership
for a Drug-Free New Jersey, will unveil
the winning entry in a statewide billboard/calendar
competition. Designed to encourage middle
school students and their parents to
work together to create billboard messages
with the theme “Dangers of Underage
Drinking,” this year’s competition
produced more then 1,500 entries. Thirteen
finalists were selected and invited
to the press conference, where the winner
will be announced for the first time.
The winning designs will be displayed
by the children.
