Seaside Heights - New Jersey’s law enforcement community and traffic safety professionals gathered today on the Boardwalk to announce the start of this year’s Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization. This major seat belt use initiative is part of a nationwide campaign to reduce crash-related fatalities and injuries by buckling up.

Click It or Ticket
begins on May 22nd and will continue through June 4th.

“Seat belt use in the Garden State is now at 86%, one of the highest percentages in the nation,” said Division Director Roberto Rodriguez. “Law enforcement has its sights set on the remaining 14% who refuse to buckle up. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, seat belt use reduces fatalities by 45%, and reduces the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50%.’’

The Division has awarded $4,000 grants to 156 police agencies throughout the State to cover overtime for high-visibility saturation patrols and seatbelt checkpoints. Many other police departments will be participating in the mobilization without grant assistance. Seat belt use is a primary law in New Jersey, and police will be using a zero tolerance approach when it comes to violators.

Today’s ‘Click It or Ticket’ announcement came during the State’s annual 101 Days of Summer kickoff. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day sees traffic volumes swell, and pedestrian traffic dramatically increase at the Jersey Shore. The Division will also be undertaking a targeted Speed/Aggressive Driving crackdown, a Pedestrian Safety campaign at the Jersey Shore, and an Impaired Driving crackdown as 101 Days of Summer progresses.
