NEWARK – Acting Attorney
General Anne Milgram and Criminal Justice
Director Gregory A. Paw announced that the
Division of Criminal Justice has obtained
a lengthy prison sentence for an Essex County
man who was convicted at trial of drug and
gun offenses.
Superior
Court Judge Michael L. Ravin of Essex County
today sentenced Sanu Parks, 35, of East
Orange, to 22 years in state prison.
Parks
was convicted at trial in June of charges
of second-degree possession of cocaine with
intent to distribute, third-degree possession
of cocaine with intent to distribute within
1,000 feet of a school, and second-degree
possession of a weapon during the commission
of a drug crime.
Judge
Ravin sentenced Parks to 15 years in state
prison on the second-degree drug possession
charge, and five years on the third-degree
possession charge, which will run concurrently.
The judge sentenced Parks to seven years
on the firearm charge, which will run consecutively
to the 15-year term, bringing the aggregate
sentence to 22 years.
Parks
was arrested on March 3, 2005 when state
investigators executed a search warrant
at his former apartment on Park Avenue in
East Orange and seized nearly five ounces
of cocaine, a digital scale, packaging materials
and a loaded .45-caliber handgun.
Deputy
Attorney General Frank Gennaro prosecuted
the case for the Division of Criminal Justice.
State Investigator Kevin Weinkauff led the
investigation.
