Trenton,
N.J. – Attorney General Stuart Rabner
today appointed Lisa P. Thornton, a senior
associate counsel in the Governor’s
office, as his chief of staff at the Department
of Law and Public Safety.
Thornton, 42, of Neptune Township, was assigned
to the authorities unit in the counsel’s
office, monitoring the operations of independent
boards, commissions and authorities. Rabner
was Governor Corzine’s chief counsel
before the Governor nominated him as attorney
general. Rabner was confirmed by the State
Senate on Monday and sworn into office on
Tuesday.
Thornton was a special deputy commissioner
in the Department of Banking and Insurance
for four years before joining the counsel’s
office in January. She helped develop policies
related to insurance compliance and consumer
issues. She helped gained passage of the
New Jersey Automobile Insurance Cost and
Competition Act of 2003, legislation that
helped bring insurance companies back into
the New Jersey market.
Thornton, a 1986 graduate of Douglass College
at Rutgers University, earned her law degree
from Rutgers School of Law in Newark in
1992. She was the Neptune Township Municipal
Court judge from 1999 to 2001. She worked
for Prudential Financial as a claims analyst
and attorney from 1986 through 2002.
"Lisa
has the extensive experience and excellent
skills to help manage the Department of
Law and Public Safety,’’ Rabner
said. "In addition, she will play an
important role in expanding our office’s
outreach programs to strengthen ties between
state law enforcement programs and initiatives
and local communities.’’
First
Assistant Attorney General Anne Milgram
and Criminal Justice Director Gregory Paw
will continue in their top leadership posts
in the department, Rabner said.
