TRENTON
– Attorney General Stuart Rabner and
Criminal Justice Director Gregory A. Paw
announced that four members of the Seldon
Ledford Stables – including the owner
and his son, who is a top harness racing
driver – have pleaded guilty to possessing
controlled dangerous substances.
According to Director Paw, Seldon Ledford,
60, of Illinois, pleaded guilty before Superior
Court Judge Bette E. Uhrmacher in Monmouth
County to third-degree conspiracy to possess
Equipoise, a controlled dangerous substance.
In addition, Ledford’s
son, Eric Ledford, 35, of Monroe Township,
and two grooms employed by Ledford Stables,
Ryan Dailey, 32, and his wife Ardena Daily,
31, both of East Windsor, pleaded guilty
to third-degree possession of a controlled
dangerous substance, Equipoise.
At the guilty plea hearing, Seldon Ledford,
a nationally-ranked trainer of harness racing
horses admitted to knowingly allowing his
co-defendants to possess Equipoise at Show
Place Farms in Englishtown, Monmouth County.
In addition, Eric Ledford, a leading driver
at the Meadowlands Racetrack, and Ryan and
Ardena Dailey admitted to possessing Equipoise,
a type of anabolic steroid, without having
a valid prescription.
The guilty pleas stemmed from a New Jersey
State Police investigation. State troopers
in the Horse Race Unit arrested the four
defendants on March 31, 2006.
The defendants face significant penalties
including license suspension and/or fines
from the New Jersey Racing Commission.
